During my teenage years, drugs and violence consumed many urban cities across America, and New York was no exception. The lobby of my building wasn’t just a waiting area—it could be a danger zone. The hallways echoed with uncertainty, and stepping outside often meant navigating unpredictable situations. The things I witnessed, the circumstances I endured—they all became normal. And that’s the danger of an environment like that: normalization.

For years, I accepted this reality, believing it was just the way things were. But what I didn’t realize was that outside of this dark cloud lay a world I could only dream of—a world of safety, space, and opportunity. And that world was waiting for me in Florida.

Moving from the inner city to a four-bedroom, two-bathroom home with a two-car garage in a suburban neighborhood felt surreal. I remember the first time I pulled into my driveway, a sense of pride and disbelief washing over me. It was as if I had awakened within my dream.
