Growing up in the New York City Housing Projects for 26 years, I never fully understood the concept of wealth creation or the transformative power of homeownership. My family, like so many others, lived paycheck to paycheck, making rental payments month after month, year after year. We had a roof over our heads, a place to call home, but at the end of those 26 years, we had built exactly zero equity in the property we lived in.
It wasn’t until I moved to Florida and became a REALTOR that I truly understood the profound difference homeownership could make in a family’s life—not just in terms of stability, but in building generational wealth.
Life in the NYC Housing Projects: A Cycle of Renting
I grew up in a tight-knit community in the NYC Housing Projects. While they provided affordable housing, they also perpetuated a cycle of renting that kept many families, including mine, from building wealth.
